비자 [visa]

개인이 타국으로 들어가려고 할 때, 자기 나라 또는 체재 중인 나라에 있는 대사ㆍ공사ㆍ영사로부터

여권 검사를 받고 서명을 받는 일로, 입국사증이라고도 한다.

 

When an individual tries to enter another country, his / her passport or passport is 

inspected and signed by an ambassador, corporation or consulate in his / her country of 

residence, also known as an entry visa.

 

'visa'는 라틴어의 'vise'가 어원이며,

이는 '배서하다, 보증하다, 보장하다, 확인하다, 인정하다, 증명하다, 사증(査證)하다' 등의 의미를 갖고 있다.

 

The word "visa" comes from the Latin word "vise", meaning "to endorse, endorse, 

guarantee, confirm, acknowledge, prove, and visa."

 

이 제도는 특히 제1차 세계대전 중에 주로 군사상의 이유에서 스파이의 입국을 방지하기 위하여 발달된 것인데,

전후에도 국내의 보안, 노동문제나 이민 제한 등의 견지에서 실시되었다.

 

This system was developed especially during the First World War to prevent spies from entering, 

for military reasons, in the context of domestic security, labor issues and immigration restrictions.

세계 각국은 각 나라의 국내법으로 사증사무에 대하여 규정하고 있다.

 

Countries around the world provide for visa affairs in their respective national laws.

 

주로 여권이 정식으로 발행된 것이며 유효한 여권임을 증명하고 사증자가 그 여권 소지자를 안전하게

자기 나라에 입국시키도록 본국 관리에게 추천하는 등의 기능을 한다.

 

It usually functions as proof that the passport has been duly issued and is a valid passport, 

and recommends to the home country officials that the visa allows the holder to safely 

enter their country.

 

그리고 국가 간에 비자면제협정을 체결하여 3개월(90일) 정도의 단기간 체류 때에는

비자를 면제하는 나라가 많다.

 

Many countries exempt visas for short stays of three months (90 days) after 

signing visa exemption agreements between countries.

 

우리나라도 프랑스ㆍ영국 등 여러 나라와 이 협정을 체결하여 비자 없이

이들 나라에 단기간 체류할 수 있게 하고 있다.

 

Korea has signed this agreement with several countries, including France and 

the United Kingdom, to allow them to stay in these countries for a short time without a visa.
